There are a lot of moving parts and pieces to every wedding, there is no doubt about that. Not everything is one size fits all. There are some important things that you will want to keep in mind when you are finding the right photographer for your wedding.

  1.  Meet with them in person to see their portfolio. You can view most of their work online through their website and Instagram page, but everyone puts their best work forward. They are showcasing the best of the best on their website and their Instagram. Ask to see any portfolios they may have in person.
  2. Make sure that you like their personality. This person will be with you for your entire wedding day. You don’t want to be around someone you don’t like or don’t get along with all day…if you don’t have to (family doesn’t count).
  3.  Understand what you are getting. Wedding packages include lots of different things. Make sure you know what is included in your package up front. Don’t wait until after the wedding to discuss what you “thought” was in your package. It is beyond too late at that point.
  4. Is there going to be a second or third shoot at your wedding? This is something to be aware of and ask about their style of photography as well. Usually it is very similar to the main photographer but just be on the safe side.
  5. Most photographers require a deposit to hold your date and full payment a week or so prior to the wedding. Know what their payment schedule looks like.
  6. There are also certain cancellation plans for most photographers. KNOW THIS!! You never want to need it, but if you do, make sure you have a copy of your contract and know what the photographer’s cancellation policy is.
  7. If they don’t have a contract, I would be skeptical. Contracts protect everyone involved. Usually they are not needed and are just a security blanket that everyone signs. But in case something does happen and it is needed, you will be covered as well as your photographer.
  8. Make sure your photographer has insurance. You never know what could go wrong and this is another instance where you want to make sure a professional is covering your day. With so many people being in one place…you just never know…

Usually  all you need is a gut feeling about someone to really know if you get a good vibe from them, if you like their work, you can usually just tell. These tips are things to keep in mind. It’s not always the best idea to “hire” a friend or family member. I’ve heard so many horror stories where people never get their photos, their photos are all completely yellow, the friend just danced the whole time and missed all the important things, the family member only took the photos they wanted to take, etc. I could go on and on, but those tips above should keep you out of the hard spots that nobody wants to be in.
