And that will remain the official party line!

My financial planner, Charles, asked me to tell a little white lie in order to postpone their photographic experience by two weeks. After talking to him on the phone during one of the Discovery Calls we do with each of our clients, he decided he wanted to propose to his girlfriend. He needed a little more time to buy an engagement ring and turn their photo session into a proposal…with photographic evidence for generations to come. He loved the idea that the artwork we designed together would be something his children, grand children and great grand children would be able to enjoy as they retold to story of their proposal.

So, the day after Thanksgiving, I texted him to say I had food poisoning from eating turkey that had been left out too long and could we possibly reschedule. My calendar was booked, but we could possibly do their session in 2 weeks if that worked for them? Disappointedly, (wink, wink,) he agreed.

Fast forward 2 weeks and we met in downtown Honolulu for their photo shoot. They specifically chose to do an urban photo shoot instead of the beach, because this is where they worked. This is where they spent their days. This was their life right now. It was perfect for them. We walked all over, taking photos at some of their favorite cafes and eating spots. I honestly don’t know how Charles kept it together, because the plan was for him to propose at the end of the session, in front of a few friends, in the spot where he kisses Jen goodbye every morning before they both head off to work in different buildings. I have to say, I was surprised there wasn’t any sweat stains on his shirt…he kept his cool rather remarkably.

As we made our way around downtown, Charles periodically, anxiously checked his cell phone, waiting to hear if their friends were in place. Slowly, we made our way over to the spot where he wanted to propose. Jen wanted a specific photo of them crossing the street with sunglasses on, so we did that photo and then I asked them to move to one side of the road and give me a minute to change lenses…as I did this, I was talking to Jen, and Charles got down on one knee. Their friends came out from behind the building and started playing her favourite song. With tears falling from her eyes, Jen said yes! And the rest as they say, is history!

I love that I will forever be a part of the engagement story. Jen and Charles are some of the sweetest people I know and it was a privilege to be able to capture the moment their forever started. The album and artwork designed from their photographic experience will definitely be something their children, grand children and great grand children will be able to enjoy. Congratulations you guys! And welcome to the rest of your lives….
