A Military homecoming is always unique and emotional. It always feels like it takes forever and they always brings tears. For the Vance family, dad’s homecoming seemed like it would never arrive…literally.
Not all military members come home with their battalion, troop, or squadron. Some military personal fly home on civilian aircraft, in civilian clothes and walk off the plane just like everybody else arriving at the destination. However, unlike everybody else disembarking, these special passengers have special someones waiting for them at baggage claim. Someones who have counted down the days since their departure. Little ones who have only seen them via photos or skype for the past several months. And a spouse who has kept the family going, and waited patiently for their service member to come home. Not to mention the hand crafted signs family members make to welcome them home.
412 days and counting
After 412 days, this soldier finally arrived home to his family. The anxious anticipation leading up to the first glimpse could be felt by everyone. Even though the Honolulu airport was full of vacationers and locals returning home, it was as though no one else was around. Watching Kim as she ran towards her husband and embrace for the first time brought tears to my eyes. And as Little Miss ran to great her dad, it was evident she knew exactly who he was. Someone, who was so excited that he went and hid, finally came out of hiding and wrapped his arms wide around his daddy. These are the reasons I love military homecomings. Raw, honest emotions. And smiles all around.
